Robert J. Birgeneau (born July 3, 1942) is an American physicist and academic administrator known for his contributions to condensed‑matter physics and for leadership roles at several major research institutions.
Early life and education
Birgeneau was born in Boise, Idaho, United States. He earned a Bachelor of Science in physics from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1964 and continued at Berkeley for graduate studies, receiving his Ph.D. in physics in 1970. His doctoral research focused on critical phenomena in magnetic systems.
Academic career
- Brown University (1970–1990): Birgeneau joined the faculty of the physics department, where he conducted research on phase transitions, superfluidity, and neutron scattering. He was promoted to full professor and served as department chair.
- Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1990–1998): He was appointed dean of the School of Science, overseeing the departments of physics, chemistry, biology, and earth, atmospheric and planetary sciences. During his tenure, he emphasized interdisciplinary research and expanded graduate programs.
- University of Toronto (2005–2013): Birgeneau served as the 10th president of the University of Toronto.
