He served as a professor of communication at the University of Minnesota, where he contributed to the development of communication theory as an academic discipline. Craig authored several influential texts, including Communication Theory: A Bibliography (1972) and Communication Theory Today (1978), which compiled and analyzed contemporary research in the field. He was also an editor for the Quarterly Journal of Speech, helping to shape scholarly discourse in communication studies.
