Robbie Regan

Robbie Regan (born 15 August 1968) is a Welsh former professional Grand Prix motorcycle road racer. He is best known for winning the 1996 125cc World Championship. His career was marked by his determination and success despite often competing with fewer resources than factory-backed teams.

Career

Regan began his racing career in national championships in the United Kingdom, where he achieved considerable success. He competed in various British championships, demonstrating a natural talent for motorcycle racing.

He made his Grand Prix debut in the 1988 125cc class as a wildcard entry. He gradually established himself in the world championship paddock, competing in both the 125cc and 250cc categories.

1996 125cc World Championship

Regan's most notable achievement came in the 1996 season. Riding for the Ten Kate Racing team on a Honda RS125, Regan mounted an impressive campaign in the 125cc World Championship. Despite not being on a dominant factory team, his consistent performance, strategic riding, and the team's dedicated efforts saw him clinch the title. He won two races during the season (at Eastern Creek, Australia, and Brno, Czech Republic) and secured several other podium finishes, ultimately winning the championship by a narrow margin over Emilio Alzamora. This made him the first Welsh rider to win a Grand Prix world title.

Later Career and Retirement

Following his championship win, Regan continued to compete in Grand Prix racing, moving to the 250cc class. However, he struggled to replicate his 125cc success, often battling injuries and limited machinery. He retired from full-time Grand Prix racing at the end of the 1999 season.

Legacy

Robbie Regan is remembered as a tenacious and skilled rider who, through sheer grit and talent, managed to overcome significant odds to become a Grand Prix world champion. His 1996 title remains a highlight in Welsh motorsport history and an inspiration for privateer racers.
