Rob Sonic is the stage name of Robert Smith, an American rapper and producer from Washington, D.C., known for his contributions to independent hip-hop. He is recognized for his distinctive vocal delivery, intricate lyrical style, and his work as a solo artist, as well as a member of the groups The Perceptionists and Hail Mary Mallon.

Career

  • Early Work & The Perceptionists: Rob Sonic began his career in the underground hip-hop scene. He rose to prominence as a member of The Perceptionists, a Boston-based hip-hop group he formed with fellow rappers Mr. Lif and Akrobatik. The group released their critically acclaimed debut album, Black Dialogue, in 2005 on Definitive Jux Records. They later reunited to release their second album, Resolution, in 2017.

  • Solo Career: Concurrent with his group activities, Rob Sonic has maintained an active solo career, releasing several albums. His solo discography includes Telicatessen (2004), Circuit Breaker (2007), Alice in Thunderdome (2012), and Defriender (2018). His solo material often features production from himself and other notable producers such as Blockhead.

  • Hail Mary Mallon: In 2011, Rob Sonic formed the hip-hop supergroup Hail Mary Mallon with long-time collaborator and fellow Definitive Jux artist Aesop Rock. DJ Big Wiz provided scratches and production for their initial releases. The duo released their debut album, Are You Gonna Eat That?, in 2011, followed by Bestiary in 2014. The group is known for its abstract lyricism and often dark, complex production.
