Roary the Racing Car is a British preschool animated television series created by David Jenkins and developed by Keith Chapman, who is also known for creating Bob the Builder and PAW Patrol. The series premiered in May 2007 on Channel 5's Milkshake! block and Nick Jr. in the United Kingdom. It was produced by Chapman Entertainment and Cosgrove Hall Films.
The program is set at the fictional Silver Hatch racetrack and follows the adventures of a group of anthropomorphic racing cars and the human staff who maintain the facility. The series utilizes a combination of stop-motion animation and computer-generated imagery (CGI) to depict the characters and environment.
The central character, Roary, is a young, energetic red racing car with a personality characterized by curiosity and a desire to learn. Other primary vehicle characters include Maxi, a competitive yellow Formula One-style car; Cici, a pink stunt car; and Drifter, an orange drift car. The human characters include Big Chris, the track’s lead mechanic (voiced by comedian Peter Kay), and Marsha, the race marshal. The series was narrated by the renowned Formula One racing driver Sir Stirling Moss.
