Rio Negrinho

Overview
Rio Negrinho is a municipality located in the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil. It is situated in the Vale do Itajaí region of the southern part of the country. According to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) 2022 estimates, the municipality has a population of approximately 27 000 inhabitants and covers an area of about 265 km².

History
The area that now comprises Rio Negrinho was originally inhabited by indigenous peoples of the Kaingang and Xokleng groups. In the early 20th century, the region experienced significant European immigration, especially of German and Italian settlers, who established agricultural colonies. The settlement was initially part of the municipality of Saudades. Following a period of population growth and local development, Rio Negrinho was elevated to municipality status in the mid‑20th century (officially established as a municipality in 1963). The name “Rio Negrinho” derives from a small dark‑watered stream that traverses the locality.

Geography
Rio Negrinho lies in the highland zone of Santa Catarina, at an average elevation of roughly 600 meters above sea level. The municipality is bounded by Saudades to the north, Içara to the east, Rodeio to the south, and São João Batista to the west. The climate is classified as subtropical highland (Cfb), characterized by warm summers, cool winters, and an annual average precipitation of about 1 500 mm. The terrain is gently undulating, with a mixture of forested areas and cultivated land.

Demographics
The 2022 IBGE estimate places the population at around 27 000, with a density of roughly 102 inhabitants per km². The demographic profile reflects a predominance of people of European descent (mainly German and Italian ancestry), alongside a growing proportion of mixed‑race (pardo) and Afro‑Brazilian residents. Portuguese is the official language; German dialects may still be heard in some households.

Economy
The local economy is primarily based on agriculture and livestock. Key agricultural products include tobacco, corn, beans, and horticultural crops. Cattle raising for both meat and dairy production is also common. Small‑scale agro‑industrial activities, such as tobacco processing and dairy products, contribute to municipal revenues. Service sectors—particularly retail trade, education, and health—serve the resident population.

Transportation
Rio Negrinho is accessed primarily by state highway SC‑460, which connects the municipality to the regional centers of Içara and Saudades. Public transportation consists of intercity bus services linking Rio Negrinho with larger urban areas in Santa Catarina, including the state capital, Florianópolis. The nearest major airport is Chapecó Airport, located about 130 km to the west.

Culture and Events
Cultural life reflects the municipality’s European heritage. Annual festivals celebrate traditional German and Italian customs, featuring folk music, dance, and cuisine. Religious celebrations are predominantly Roman Catholic, with several historic churches serving the community.

Administration
The municipal government is headed by a mayor (prefeito) elected to a four‑year term, and a municipal council (câmara de vereadores) responsible for legislative functions. The municipality falls under the judicial jurisdiction of the 3rd Judicial Region of Santa Catarina.
