Definition
Ringerike Hospital (Norwegian: Ringerike sykehus) is a regional public general hospital located in Hønefoss, the administrative centre of Ringerike municipality in Viken county, Norway. It provides acute, elective, and specialist medical services to the population of the Ringerike region and surrounding areas.
Overview
Established in 1995 as part of a nationwide reorganisation of the Norwegian health system, Ringerike Hospital operates under the authority of the Vestre Viken Hospital Trust, which in turn is governed by the Southern and Eastern Norway Regional Health Authority (Helse Sør-Øst RHF). The hospital offers a range of services including emergency care, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, internal medicine, paediatrics, mental health, and rehabilitation. It serves as a referral centre for primary‑care physicians in the municipalities of Ringerike, Hole, Jevnaker, and parts of Modum.
The facility comprises several buildings on a campus adjacent to the municipal centre, with a total of approximately 120 inpatient beds and multiple outpatient clinics. In addition to clinical functions, Ringerike Hospital engages in health promotion, preventive programmes, and collaborates with local educational institutions for training of medical and allied‑health professionals.
Etymology/Origin
The name “Ringerike” derives from the historic district of Ringerike, whose name originates from the Old Norse Ringa (the name of a river) combined with the suffix -ríki meaning “realm” or “district”. Hence, “Ringerike” roughly translates to “the realm of the Ringa river”. The hospital’s Norwegian designation, Ringerike sykehus, directly reflects its location within this district.
