Ridgely Gaither

Ridgely Gaither (1896–1969) was a United States Army officer who attained the rank of brigadier general. He served with distinction in three major conflicts: World War I, World War II, and the Korean War. Gaither is perhaps best known for commanding the 1st Cavalry Division during the Korean War.

Early Life and Education Born in 1896, Ridgely Gaither began his military career during World War I. He was commissioned into the U.S. Army Reserve Corps in 1917 and later transferred to the Regular Army in 1920. Throughout the interwar period, Gaither furthered his military education, attending the U.S. Army Command and General Staff School and the U.S. Army War College, which prepared him for higher command responsibilities.

Military Career

  • World War I: Gaither served as a company commander with the 26th Infantry Division in France, gaining early combat experience on the Western Front.

  • Korean War: In 1951, Gaither was assigned to the Korean Peninsula. From June 1951 to March 1952, he commanded the 1st Cavalry Division. Under his leadership, the division participated in key operations, maintaining positions along the 38th parallel and engaging in intense combat.
  • Retirement: General Gaither retired from active duty in 1954, concluding a career that spanned nearly four decades of service to his country.
