Richie Sookhai

Richie Sookhai is a Trinidadian and Tobagonian politician and a prominent figure in local government, particularly within the city of San Fernando. A long-standing member of the People's National Movement (PNM), he is best known for serving multiple terms as the Mayor of San Fernando, Trinidad and Tobago's second-largest city.

Early Political Career Richie Sookhai began his career in public service at the local government level. He served as a Councillor for the Les Efforts West/La Romaine electoral district within the San Fernando City Corporation, gaining experience in municipal administration and community representation.

Mayor of San Fernando Sookhai has held the prestigious position of Mayor of San Fernando on more than one occasion:

  • First Term (2013-2016): He was first elected Mayor of San Fernando in October 2013, following the local government elections. During this period, he succeeded Kazim Hosein. His tenure focused on various urban development initiatives, infrastructure improvements, and fostering community engagement within the city.
  • Second Term (2023-Present): Following the Trinidad and Tobago local elections in August 2023, Richie Sookhai was once again selected to serve as Mayor of San Fernando, succeeding Robert Parris.
