Nesbitt pursued his higher education at prominent Canadian institutions. Nesbitt's professional career spans several key roles within Canada's financial industry. Early in his career, he served as the Chief Operating Officer of the Investment Industry Regulatory Organization of Canada (IIROC), the national self-regulatory body overseeing investment dealers and trading activities on Canadian debt and equity marketplaces.He later rose to prominence as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the TMX Group, the operator of the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX), TSX Venture Exchange, Montréal Exchange, and other vital components of Canadian financial market infrastructure. During his tenure, Nesbitt navigated significant industry changes and strategic challenges, including various proposed mergers and acquisitions involving international exchanges.
Following his leadership at TMX Group, Nesbitt joined CIBC, one of Canada's largest financial institutions, where he held the position of Group Head of Wholesale Banking. In this capacity, he was responsible for overseeing CIBC's capital markets, corporate banking, and wholesale banking operations.
