Early life and education
Ricardo A. Azziz was born in 1958 in the United States. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from the University of Texas at San Antonio. He received his medical degree (MD) from the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston and later completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UT Health). Azziz also holds a Master of Public Health (MPH) from the University of Texas School of Public Health in Houston.
Academic and administrative career
- University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UT Health) – Azziz served as the 20th president of UT Health from 2014 to 2019. During his tenure he oversaw expansion of the institution’s research enterprise, increased clinical partnerships, and led initiatives aimed at improving health outcomes for underserved populations.
- Texas A&M Health Science Center – Prior to his presidency at UT Health, Azziz was appointed as the chancellor of the Texas A&M Health Science Center (now Texas A&M Health) in 2012, where he directed the integration of health education, research, and service across the university system.
- University of California, Irvine School of Medicine – Earlier in his career, Azziz held faculty positions in obstetrics and gynecology and contributed to the development of curricula focusing on women’s health and reproductive endocrinology.
Research and scholarly work
Azziz’s research has centered on reproductive endocrinology, particularly polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and related metabolic disorders. He has authored and co‑authored peer‑reviewed articles in journals such as The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism and Fertility and Sterility. His work has contributed to clinical guidelines for the diagnosis and management of PCOS.
