Description
Rhyzodiastes proprius is a small ground beetle measuring approximately 6–8 mm (0.24–0.31 in) in length. The beetle has an elongate, sub‑cylindrical body that is glossy reddish‑black, with dark‑red legs and antennae and rufescent (reddish‑brown) tarsi and palpi. The head is relatively small, bearing characteristic inter‑antennal punctiform impressions and oblique furrows. The prothorax is oblong with faint longitudinal impressions. Elytra are slightly narrower than the thorax, possessing distinct tubercular shoulders and a deep scutellar depression; the sutural space is flattened and bounded by broad grooves. Legs are robust, with the anterior tibiae of normal structure and the middle and posterior tibiae terminating in a large dentiform protuberance. Antennae are sparsely pilose, with segments two to ten moniliform; the apical segment is larger and acuminate.
Distribution and Habitat
The species is endemic to New Zealand, occurring only on the North Island. It is associated with decaying woody material; both larvae and adults inhabit rotting logs, where they presumably feed on micro‑fauna or fungal matter within the decomposing wood.
Ecology
While specific ecological studies on R. proprius are limited, members of the subfamily Rhysodinae are generally known as specialized wood‑dwelling beetles, often linked to moist, decaying substrates. Their morphology—flattened bodies and reduced eyes—reflects adaptation to a cryptic lifestyle under bark and within logs.
