Rhyssemus germanus

Rhyssemus germanus is a species of scarab beetle belonging to the family Scarabaeidae, specifically within the subfamily Aphodiinae. It is a relatively small, dark-colored beetle primarily found in sandy environments across parts of Europe and Asia.

Description

Adults of Rhyssemus germanus typically measure between 2.5 to 4.0 millimeters in length. Their bodies are elongated-oval, robust, and generally black or dark brown, sometimes with a faint metallic sheen. A distinguishing characteristic of species within the genus Rhyssemus is the presence of distinct longitudinal ridges and furrows on the elytra (wing covers), giving them a characteristic sculpted or rugose appearance. The pronotum (thoracic segment behind the head) is also often sculptured, with transverse ridges or tubercles. The antennae are short, clubbed, and typically composed of nine segments.

Habitat and Distribution

This species demonstrates a strong preference for sandy habitats. It is commonly found in coastal dunes, sandy riverbanks, heathlands, and other inland sandy areas. Its distribution spans across much of temperate Europe, extending into parts of Asia. It is often found burrowing in sandy soil, sometimes in association with the dung of herbivores (such as sheep, cattle, or rabbits) or other decaying organic matter, though it is not as strictly coprophagous as some other Aphodiinae.

Ecology and Behavior

As with many Aphodiinae beetles, Rhyssemus germanus is considered a detritivore, feeding on decaying plant material, roots, fungi, and occasionally dung. Adults are primarily active during the warmer months, typically from spring through autumn. They are nocturnal and can sometimes be attracted to light. Larvae develop in the soil, likely feeding on organic matter, and undergo complete metamorphosis. The beetles play a role in nutrient cycling by breaking down organic matter in their preferred sandy ecosystems.
