The genus was established by Pier Andrea Saccardo and later formalised by Augusto Berlian in Iconographia Fungorum (1890) 【1†L84-L90】. It is indexed in MycoBank (MB 4733) and Index Fungorum (IF 4733) 【2†L1-L4】.
Species diversity
According to the Species Fungorum database (2020), the genus comprises approximately 17 morphologically described species 【2†L1-L4】. The type species is Rhynchosphaeria dusenii Henn. 【2†L5-L6】.
