Description
Rhaphium melampus is a small to medium‑sized member of the long‑legged flies (Dolichopodidae). As with other species in the genus, it possesses slender, elongated legs and a generally metallic sheen on the body. Detailed morphological characters—such as the structure of the male genitalia, wing venation pattern, and setation—are used to differentiate it from closely related Rhaphium species. Precise diagnostic features are documented in specialized taxonomic keys (e.g., Bei‑Bienko & Steyskal 1988; Grichanov 2004).
Distribution
The species has been recorded from a broad range of locations across the Palearctic region, particularly in:
- Western and Central Europe (e.g., United Kingdom, France, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands)
- Southern Europe (e.g., Italy, Spain, Greece)
- Extending into parts of Eastern Europe (e.g., Poland, Czech Republic)
Distribution data are compiled in the Fauna Europaea database and the World Catalog of Dolichopodidae (Grichanov 2017).
Habitat and Ecology
Rhaphium melopus inhabits humid, vegetated environments where it can be found on:
- Moist meadow edges and grasslands
- Forest clearings and riparian zones
- Low vegetation and leaf litter
Adults are predatory, typically hunting smaller arthropods on plant surfaces. Larval habitats are less well documented but are presumed to be in moist soil or decaying organic matter, as is typical for many Dolichopodidae.
Life Cycle
The species follows the general dipteran cycle of egg → larva → pupa → adult. Seasonal activity peaks in the warmer months (late spring through early autumn), corresponding with the phenology of many temperate dolichopodid flies.
Conservation Status
No specific conservation assessment has been published for R. melampus. It is not listed on the IUCN Red List and is generally considered to be a widespread, though locally uncommon, species within its range.

Notes
While the general biology and distribution of Rhaphium melampus are documented, detailed ecological studies (e.g., specific prey items, larval development) remain limited. Further field research would aid in clarifying its ecological role within European habitats.
