Renata Babak (1934 – 2003) was a Ukrainian‑American mezzo‑soprano opera singer. Born in Kyiv, Ukrainian SSR, she received her musical training at the Kyiv Conservatory, where she studied voice under prominent Soviet teachers. Babak began her professional career with the Kyiv Opera Company, performing a repertoire that included both Ukrainian and standard Russian operatic works.
In the late 1970s she joined the Soviet State Opera Ensemble for an international tour that included performances in the United States. During the 1979 tour, Babak defected to the United States, subsequently obtaining American citizenship. Following her defection, she pursued a career in the American operatic scene, making her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City in the early 1980s. At the Met, she performed roles such as Azucena in Il Trovatore and the title role in Carmen, earning recognition for the richness and dramatic intensity of her voice.
Babak continued to appear with major North American opera houses and concert venues throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, also engaging in teaching and master‑class activities. She retired from the stage in the mid‑1990s and resided in New York until her death in 2003.
Her career is noted for the transition from a Soviet‑trained artist to a prominent figure in the Western operatic world, illustrating the cultural exchanges of the late Cold War period.
