Remigijus Šimašius

Remigijus Šimašius (born January 30, 1974) is a Lithuanian politician who served as the Mayor of Vilnius, the capital city of Lithuania, from 2015 to 2023. A prominent member of the Liberal Movement (Lietuvos Respublikos liberalų sąjūdis) political party, he previously held the position of Minister of Justice of Lithuania from 2008 to 2012 and was a Member of the Seimas (Parliament) from 2012 to 2015.

Early Life and Education Šimašius was born in Vilnius, then part of the Lithuanian SSR, Soviet Union. He pursued higher education at Vilnius University, where he earned a master's degree in law. His academic and professional background before entering politics included work as a legal expert and economist, with a focus on public law and economic policy.

Political Career

  • Early Career and Ministry of Justice: Šimašius began his career in public service as a legal advisor and expert. In 2008, he was appointed Minister of Justice in the centre-right government led by Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius. He served in this capacity until 2012, during which time he was involved in various legal and judicial reforms aimed at modernizing Lithuania's legal framework and enhancing transparency within the justice system.

  • Member of the Seimas: Following his term as Minister of Justice, Šimašius was elected to the Seimas, the Lithuanian parliament, in 2012, representing the Liberal Movement. As a parliamentarian, he continued to focus on legal, economic, and governmental reform issues.

  • Mayor of Vilnius (2015–2023): In 2015, Šimašius was elected Mayor of Vilnius, marking a significant personal victory and a milestone for the Liberal Movement in municipal politics. He was successfully re-elected for a second term in 2019.
