Reinaldo Rueda

Reinaldo Rueda (born 28 March 1971) is a Colombian professional football manager and former midfielder. He is noted for his work with national teams and clubs in South America and the Middle East.

Early life and playing career
Rueda was born in Cali, Colombia. He began his footballing career as a midfielder, playing in the Colombian lower divisions, though he never achieved prominence as a player. His playing career concluded in the late 1990s, after which he transitioned into coaching.

Coaching career

Colombia U20
Rueda first gained recognition as the head coach of the Colombia national under‑20 team, leading them to the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship in the Netherlands, where the side reached the round of 16.

Colombia national team
In 2008, he was appointed interim manager of the senior Colombia national team, later becoming the full‑time head coach. Under his guidance, Colombia qualified for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, its first appearance since 1998. The team advanced to the Round of 16, losing 2–1 to Uruguay.

Ecuador national team
Rueda took charge of the Ecuador national team in 2015. He oversaw Ecuador's qualification for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, achieved after a play‑off victory over Peru.

Club management
Following his international tenure, Rueda managed several clubs, including:

  • Club Atlético Huracán (Argentina, 2017) – brief stint before moving to the national team role.
  • Atlético Nacional (Colombia, 2020–2021) – guided the team to the 2021 Copa Colombia title.
  • Al Nassr (Saudi Arabia, 2022–2023) – managed the Saudi Professional League side, leading them to a runner‑up finish in the league and winning the 2023 Saudi Super Cup.
  • Cerro Porteño (Paraguay, 2023–present) – appointed head coach in September 2023.

Coaching style and reputation
Rueda is known for emphasizing disciplined defensive organization combined with rapid counter‑attacking play. His ability to work within limited resources and develop young talent has earned him a reputation as a pragmatic and adaptable manager.
