Redpath Sugar

Redpath Sugar Ltd. is a Canadian sugar refining company headquartered in Toronto, Ontario. Established in 1854 by Scottish immigrant John Redpath, the firm originally operated as a sugar refinery in the Redpath Sugar Refinery on the Toronto waterfront. It is one of the oldest continuously operating sugar producers in North America.

History
The company was founded when John Redpath, a prominent businessman and philanthropist, purchased the assets of the former Canadian Sugar Refinery. Throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Redpath Sugar expanded its production capacity and became a major supplier of refined sugar to the Canadian market. In 1973, the company was acquired by the American multinational corporation Domino Sugar, which later became part of the larger sugar conglomerate American Sugar Refining.

Operations
Redpath Sugar processes raw sugar imported from the Caribbean, South America, and other sugar‑cane–producing regions. The refinery uses a combination of traditional and modern refining techniques, including carbonatation, filtration, and crystallization, to produce various grades of granulated, powdered, and specialty sugars. The company distributes its products under the Redpath brand to retail, food service, and industrial customers across Canada.

Products
Redpath's product line includes:

  • Granulated white sugar (standard and bulk packaging)
  • Powdered (confectioners’) sugar
  • Brown and demerara sugars
  • Specialty sugars for baking and confectionery
  • Organic and reduced‑calorie sugar alternatives (through partnerships)

Corporate Structure
Redpath Sugar operates as a subsidiary of American Sugar Refining, Inc., which owns several other North American sugar brands. The company's corporate governance follows Canadian corporate regulations, and it reports financial performance as part of the parent company's consolidated statements.

Environmental and Community Initiatives
Redpath Sugar has implemented measures to reduce its environmental footprint, including water recycling, energy efficiency upgrades, and waste reduction programs at its Toronto refinery. The company also supports community programs, such as food donation drives and educational initiatives related to nutrition and food science.
