Red Aces (aerobatic team)

The Red Aces is the official aerobatic demonstration team of the Philippine Air Force (PAF). Established in 1971, the team's primary role is to showcase the skill and precision of PAF pilots, promote public interest in aviation, and represent the Philippine Air Force at national events and airshows.

History and Evolution: The Red Aces were initially formed in 1971, utilizing five North American F-86F Sabre jets. These aircraft were active in demonstrations for several years, becoming a recognizable symbol of the PAF's capabilities. Over its history, the team has operated various types of aircraft, reflecting the inventory and strategic focus of the Philippine Air Force. Subsequent aircraft used by the Red Aces have included the Northrop F-5A Freedom Fighter, Lockheed T-33A Shooting Star, North American T-28B Trojan, and the SIAI-Marchetti SF-260TP/SF-260MP trainer aircraft. The use of different aircraft types has allowed the team to adapt its performances and demonstrate different facets of the PAF's operational readiness.

Purpose and Role: The Red Aces perform complex aerial maneuvers in close formation, designed to highlight the high level of training and discipline within the Philippine Air Force. Their displays are a common feature at significant national holidays, PAF anniversary celebrations, and public events, serving as a powerful public relations tool for the armed forces. Beyond entertainment, their performances aim to inspire young Filipinos to consider careers in aviation and military service, as well as to foster national pride in the country's aerial defense capabilities. While not always continuously active due to operational priorities or resource constraints, the Red Aces represent a recurring and significant tradition within the Philippine Air Force.
