Born on 30 May 1960 in Busselton, Western Australia, Rechelle Margaret Hawkes began playing field hockey at a young age and progressed through state and national junior programmes. She made her debut for the Hockeyroos in 1985 and was a regular member of the squad through the late 1980s and 1990s. Hawkes served as team captain on several occasions, most notably during the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, where Australia won its first Olympic gold medal in women's field hockey. She also captained the side to gold at the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur and was part of the world‑championship winning team in 1994. Over her international career, Hawkes earned more than 250 caps and scored 60 goals. After retiring from playing, she has remained involved in the sport as a mentor, commentator, and advocate for women's sport.
