Ramon Torres (politician)

Ramon Torres (August 29, 1892 – December 14, 1968) was a prominent Filipino politician who served in various capacities, including as a Senator of the Philippines, Secretary of Labor, and Governor of Negros Occidental. He was a long-serving public servant whose career spanned the American colonial period, the Commonwealth era, and the early years of the Philippine Republic.

Early Life and Education Born on August 29, 1892, in Bago, Negros Occidental, Ramon Torres pursued studies in law. He passed the bar examination in 1918, which paved the way for his entry into public service.

Political Career Torres's political career began at the local level in his home province of Negros Occidental. He served as the Municipal President (equivalent to Mayor) of Bago, Negros Occidental, demonstrating his early commitment to local governance.

His influence grew, leading to his election as Governor of Negros Occidental. He served multiple terms as governor, becoming a key figure in the province's administration and development.

In 1925, Torres successfully ran for a seat in the Philippine Senate, representing the 7th Senatorial District, which included Negros Occidental. He served multiple terms in the Senate, including from 1925 to 1934 and again from 1935 to 1938. During his time as a senator, he contributed to national policy-making during a critical period leading up to the establishment of the Philippine Commonwealth.

With the advent of the Commonwealth of the Philippines under President Manuel L. Quezon, Torres was appointed as the Secretary of Labor. He served in this cabinet position from 1938 until 1941, playing a vital role in addressing labor issues and formulating policies for the Filipino workforce before the outbreak of World War II.

After the war, Torres continued to be involved in public service, again serving as Governor of Negros Occidental, helping in the rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts of the province.

Legacy Ramon Torres is remembered as one of Negros Occidental's most influential politicians, whose dedication to public service impacted both local and national governance. His extensive career, spanning several decades and political systems, solidified his reputation as a respected and enduring figure in Philippine politics. The Ramon Torres Memorial National High School in Bago City is named in his honor.
