Ramón Iribarren (30 December 1902 – 1 February 1967) was a Spanish civil engineer and a leading figure in the field of hydraulic and coastal engineering. He is best known for developing the Iribarren formula, a method for estimating the stability of rubble‑mound breakwaters, which has been widely adopted in the design of artificial harbors and coastal protection structures.
Early life and education
Iribarren was born in Barcelona, Spain. He pursued his engineering studies at the Technical University of Barcelona (now the Polytechnic University of Catalonia), graduating in 1924 with a degree in civil engineering.
Professional career
After graduation, Iribarren joined the Spanish Ministry of Public Works, where he worked on the planning and construction of several major ports, including those of Valencia, Barcelona, and Algeciras. Iribarren formula – In the 1940s, Iribarren formulated an empirical relationship that relates the weight of armour units, wave height, and seabed conditions to the stability of rubble‑mound breakwaters. The formula, first published in 1945, provided a practical tool for engineers to design breakwaters that could withstand significant wave forces while optimizing material usage. It remains a reference point in modern coastal engineering guidelines, such as those of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the International Maritime Organization.
