Ramón Gil-Casares Satrústegui (born 1953 in Madrid) is a Spanish diplomat who served as the Ambassador of Spain to the United States from 2012 to 2017. Throughout his distinguished career, he has held numerous significant diplomatic posts, representing Spain's interests in various regions worldwide.
Early Life and Education
Ramón Gil-Casares earned a degree in Law from the Complutense University of Madrid. He subsequently joined the Spanish Diplomatic Service in 1982, embarking on a career dedicated to international relations and diplomacy.
Diplomatic Career
Gil-Casares's diplomatic career has spanned several decades and continents. His early assignments included postings to the Spanish Embassies in Mexico, Syria, and the Philippines. He also served in the Permanent Representation of Spain to the European Union.
Within the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, he held positions such as Chief of Staff to the Secretary of State for Foreign Policy and the European Union, and Deputy Director General for the Philippines and Pacific Affairs. He later became Director General for Foreign Policy for Africa and the Middle East, playing a crucial role in Spain's relations with these regions.
Ambassadorships
Gil-Casares's first ambassadorship was to South Africa, where he served from 2005 to 2012. During his tenure, he was also accredited to other Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries, including Botswana, Lesotho, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Swaziland, and Zimbabwe, strengthening Spain's ties across the region.
In 2012, he was appointed Ambassador of Spain to the United States of America, a position he held until 2017. During his time in Washington, D.C., he focused on enhancing bilateral relations between Spain and the U.S. in areas such as trade, security, culture, and political cooperation.
