Rajasthali Upazila

Definition
Rajasthali Upazila is an administrative sub‑district (upazila) of Rangamati District in the Chittagong Division of Bangladesh.

Overview
Rajasthali lies in the eastern part of the Chittagong Hill Tracts, bordering Kaptai Upazila to the north, Rangamati Sadar Upazila to the east, and Bandarban District to the south and west. The upazila covers an area of approximately 382 km² (147 sq mi). According to the 2011 Bangladesh census, Rajasthali Upazila had a population of 20,162 residents, comprising a mixture of indigenous hill‑tribe communities and Bengali settlers. The population density is low relative to the national average, reflecting the hilly terrain and limited arable land.

The administrative centre is the town of Rajasthali, which houses the upazila parishad (council) offices and basic governmental services. The upazila is divided into five union parishads: Baga, Bang, Ghogomari, Khagrachhari, and Nani. These unions are further subdivided into mauzas and villages.

Etymology/Origin
The name “Rajasthali” combines the Bengali words raja (king or ruler) and thali (place or settlement). Local oral histories suggest the designation may refer to a historic hill‑top settlement associated with regional chieftains, though definitive documentary evidence for the origin of the name is not available.

Characteristics

  • Geography: The upazila is characterized by undulating hills, deep valleys, and numerous streams that feed into the Kaptai Reservoir. The terrain limits large‑scale mechanised agriculture, leading to reliance on shifting cultivation (jhum) and terraced farming.

  • Demographics: The majority of inhabitants belong to indigenous ethnic groups, principally the Chakma, Marma, and Tripura peoples. Bengali Muslims and Hindus form a smaller proportion of the population. The upazila exhibits linguistic diversity, with Chakma, Marma, and other tribal languages spoken alongside Bengali.

  • Economy: Subsistence agriculture, livestock rearing, and fishing constitute the primary livelihoods. Small‑scale cash crops such as tea, rubber, and bamboo are cultivated in selected areas. Handicrafts, especially weaving and basketry, are traditional economic activities among tribal communities.

  • Education and Health: Rajasthali Upazila hosts a limited number of primary and secondary schools, as well as a few madrasas. A community health centre provides basic medical services; more specialized care is accessed in Rangamati town.

  • Transport: Road access is primarily via unpaved tracks linking the upazila to the Kaptai Reservoir road network. Water transport on the reservoir supplements land routes, especially during the monsoon season.
