Rainbow, Oregon, is an unincorporated community in [[Lane County, Oregon]], United States. It is situated in the [[Willamette National Forest]] along the [[McKenzie River]], approximately 50 miles (80 km) east of [[Eugene, Oregon]]. The community is primarily known for its scenic location and as a hub for outdoor recreational activities.

Geography

Rainbow is nestled in the Cascade Range foothills, specifically within the McKenzie River valley. The McKenzie River, a major tributary of the [[Willamette River]], flows directly through the community. This geographical setting contributes to Rainbow's reputation as a scenic area, characterized by dense conifer forests, clear river waters, and mountainous terrain. Its elevation is approximately 1,400 feet (427 m) above sea level.

History

The area around Rainbow was historically inhabited by [[Kalapuya people]] before the arrival of European American settlers. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, logging and timber industries became prominent in the McKenzie River basin, drawing more settlers to the region.

The community of Rainbow developed to support these industries and the growing number of visitors attracted to the McKenzie River for fishing and recreation. A post office was established in Rainbow in 1924, taking its name from the abundance of rainbow trout in the nearby river. The establishment of the [[McKenzie River Highway]] (now [[Oregon Route 126]]) further connected Rainbow to larger towns and cities, facilitating both industry and tourism.

Economy and Culture

Today, Rainbow's economy is largely driven by tourism and outdoor recreation. The McKenzie River is renowned for its fly fishing, whitewater rafting, kayaking, and scenic beauty. The community serves as a base for visitors exploring the surrounding Willamette National Forest, which offers extensive opportunities for hiking, camping, and wildlife viewing.

Local businesses cater to tourists, including lodging establishments, restaurants, and guide services. While the timber industry has declined significantly since its peak, its legacy is still visible in the landscape and some remaining local operations.

Infrastructure

Rainbow is primarily served by [[Oregon Route 126]], which runs east–west through the community, connecting it to [[Springfield, Oregon]] to the west and other communities further upriver to the east.

The community maintains a post office with ZIP code 97468. Despite being unincorporated, it functions as a recognizable local center for the surrounding rural area.
