Radio Nepal

Radio Nepal is the state-owned public service broadcaster of Nepal, and the oldest and most widespread radio station in the country. Established on April 7, 1951 (2008 B.S. Chaitra 20), it began its broadcasts under the name "Nepal Prajatantra Radio" (नेपाल प्रजातन्त्र रेडियो) shortly after the end of the 104-year-long Rana regime. It was subsequently renamed Radio Nepal.

Serving as a crucial source of news, information, education, and entertainment, Radio Nepal plays a vital role in connecting the diverse communities of Nepal. Its programming primarily features content in the Nepali language, but it also broadcasts in various indigenous languages and English to cater to its multicultural audience. Historically, it operated on shortwave frequencies, ensuring national reach even in remote mountainous regions. In later years, it expanded its coverage significantly through a widespread network of FM stations across the country and has embraced digital platforms, including online streaming and mobile applications.

Radio Nepal's programming spectrum includes comprehensive news bulletins, current affairs discussions, music (traditional, folk, and modern), dramas, educational programs, agricultural advice, health awareness campaigns, and public service announcements. As a government-owned entity operating under the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, it has often served as a primary conduit for government messages and policies, while also striving to fulfill its mandate as a public service broadcaster by informing, educating, and entertaining the Nepali populace. Its long history is deeply intertwined with the political and social development of Nepal, making it a significant national institution.
