Route Description
The R405 originates at an intersection with the N2 national route south of the town of Qumbu. From this eastern terminus, the route generally heads in a north-westerly direction.
It passes through rural landscapes before reaching the town of Mount Frere. After traversing Mount Frere, the R405 continues its westward trajectory.
The route then crosses the N2 national route for a second time as it passes through the town of Tsolo. From Tsolo, the R405 maintains its westward course, serving local communities and agricultural areas.
Its western terminus is an intersection with the R396 route near the town of Ugie, bringing its approximately 130-kilometer journey to an end. The R405 acts as a significant connector for residents and trade in the northern parts of the Eastern Cape, providing an alternative or supplementary link to the N2 for local traffic.
