The surrounding terrain is characterized by steep slopes, pine‑oak forests, and a temperate climate typical of Veracruz's highlands.

History

The town of Río Blanco emerged in the late 19th century as a center for the textile industry. A textile factory, the Fábrica de Hilados y Tejidos Río Blanco, was established in 1886 and became a major employer in the region. The municipality is historically noted for the 1907 Río Blanco massacre, in which government forces suppressed a labor strike by workers demanding better wages and working conditions, resulting in numerous deaths. This event is frequently cited in studies of Mexican labor history.
