Qusay Hussein

Definition
Qusay Hussein (Arabic: قُصَيّ حُسَيْن; 23 May 1966 – 22 July 2003) was the second son of former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein and a senior member of the Iraqi regime’s security and intelligence apparatus. He held various high‑level positions within the government and was considered one of the most powerful figures in Iraq prior to the 2003 U.S.-led invasion.

Overview
Born in Baghdad to Saddam Hussein and his second wife, Sajida Talfah, Qusay was educated in Iraq and briefly attended the University of Baghdad. Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, he occupied key roles, including head of the Special Security Organization (SSO), overseer of the Republican Guard’s elite units, and manager of the regime’s intelligence networks. His responsibilities encompassed internal security, suppression of dissent, and protection of the president’s personal interests.

Following the U.S. invasion of Iraq in March 2003, Qusay went into hiding. He remained a primary target of Coalition forces, and on 22 July 2003, U.S. Army Rangers located and killed him and his brother Uday in a raid near the city of Mosul.

Etymology/Origin
The name “Qusay” (قُصَيّ) is an Arabic masculine given name derived from the root q‑s‑y, meaning “to shorten” or “to be concise.” It is historically associated with several early Islamic figures. “Hussein” (حُسَيْن) is the patronymic surname indicating descent from Hussein, a common Arabic family name that in this context reflects the lineage of Saddam Hussein.

Characteristics

  • Political Role: Held senior security positions, notably as chief of the SSO, granting him extensive authority over Iraq’s intelligence and counter‑intelligence operations.
  • Military Influence: Oversaw elite military units, including the Republican Guard, and was involved in strategic planning for the regime’s defense.
  • Public Profile: Maintained a low public profile compared to his brother Uday; however, he was widely recognized within Iraq’s political and security circles as a key architect of the regime’s internal stability.
  • Legal Status: Subject to United Nations sanctions and designated as a target by the United States Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) for his role in human rights violations and threats to regional security.
