Description
Quercus laurifolia is a medium‑to‑large deciduous tree reaching heights of 18–30 m (60–100 ft) with a trunk diameter up to 1 m (3 ft). The bark is dark gray to black, thick, and develops deep furrows with age. Leaves are simple, alternate, and lanceolate to oblong, measuring 8–15 cm (3–6 in) long and 3–5 cm (1.2–2 in) wide. They have a glossy dark green upper surface and a paler, slightly pubescent underside; leaf margins are entire or shallowly toothed. Autumn foliage turns yellow to reddish‑brown.

The species produces monoecious catkins; male flowers appear in pendulous spikes, while female flowers are sessile in the leaf axils. The fruit is an acorn maturing in one growing season, ovoid to oblong, 1.5–2.5 cm (0.6–1 in) long, with a shallow cup covering roughly one‑third of the nut. Acorns mature in the fall and serve as a food source for wildlife.

Distribution and habitat
Quercus laurifolia is native to the southeastern United States, with a range extending from southeastern Missouri and eastern Oklahoma eastward through Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, and northward into southern Illinois and Indiana. It occurs primarily in bottomlands, floodplains, swamps, and other moist, low‑lying habitats, often on alluvial or poorly drained soils. The species tolerates periodic flooding and is frequently associated with other flood‑tolerant hardwoods such as Nyssa sylvatica (black tupelo) and Platanus occidentalis (sycamore).

Ecology
The tree provides habitat and food for a variety of fauna. Its acorns are consumed by mammals (e.g., squirrels, deer, raccoons) and birds (e.g., turkeys, woodpeckers). The foliage supports numerous Lepidoptera larvae. As a member of the white‑oak group, Q. laurifolia exhibits relatively low tannin concentrations in its wood and leaves, influencing herbivore preferences.

Uses
Wood from Q. laurifolia is of moderate hardness and is used locally for fuel, fence posts, and general construction, though it is less commercially valuable than that of other oak species. The species has been employed in reforestation and wetland restoration projects due to its tolerance of wet soils.

Conservation status
According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Quercus laurifolia is classified as Least Concern, reflecting its wide distribution and stable population trends across most of its range. No major threats are presently identified, although localized habitat alteration from drainage or development can affect specific populations.

Hybridization and taxonomy notes
Some botanists consider Q. laurifolia to be of hybrid origin, possibly involving Q. stellata (post oak) and Q. palustris (pin oak), although the species is generally treated as a distinct taxon in contemporary floras.
