Qishn district

Qishn District (Arabic: مديرية قشن) is an administrative district (mudiriyah) of Al Mahrah Governorate in the southeastern part of the Republic of Yemen. The district’s administrative centre is the coastal town of Qishn, which lies on the Gulf of Aden.

Geography
The district occupies a stretch of Yemen’s eastern coastline along the Gulf of Aden and extends inland into the arid interior of the Al Mahrah region. Its terrain consists mainly of desert plains and low-lying coastal areas. The climate is characterized by hot, dry conditions year‑round, with occasional maritime influences that moderate temperatures near the shoreline.

Administrative status

  • Country: Yemen
  • Governorate: Al Mahrah
  • Administrative centre: Qishn (town)

Demographics
Population data for Qishn District are limited. The most recent publicly available figures come from the 2003 Yemeni census, which listed the district’s inhabitants at roughly thirty‑three thousand people. Updated demographic statistics have not been published by the Yemeni Central Statistical Organization.

Economy
The district’s economy is largely based on:

  • Fishing: Proximity to the Gulf of Aden supports a modest commercial and artisanal fishing sector centered on the town of Qishn.
  • Livestock herding: Nomadic and semi‑nomadic pastoralism, primarily involving goats and camels, is common in the interior areas.
  • Limited agriculture: Small‑scale cultivation of date palms and other drought‑tolerant crops occurs where groundwater is accessible.

Infrastructure and transport
A coastal road connects Qishn with other settlements in Al Mahrah Governorate, linking the district to the regional capital, Mukalla, to the west and to the border town of Al Maqah to the east. The town of Qishn possesses basic public services, including a health centre, primary schools, and a market serving surrounding villages.
