General description
Pyxidiophora is a genus of microscopic ascomycetous fungi. Members of the genus form small, flask‑shaped fruiting bodies (perithecia) that contain asci and ascospores. The perithecia are typically immersed or partially emergent in the substrate and may be surrounded by a gelatinous matrix. The genus is characterized by the production of asexual spores (conidia) in addition to sexual spores, allowing propagation under a variety of environmental conditions.

Ecology and distribution
Species of Pyxidiophora are commonly isolated from soil, decaying plant material, animal dung, and occasionally from the exoskeletons of arthropods (especially beetles). They are regarded as saprotrophic or weakly coprophilous, participating in the decomposition of organic matter. The association with insects is thought to facilitate dispersal of spores, although the fungi are not considered pathogenic to their hosts.

Geographically, Pyxidiophora species have been reported worldwide, with records from temperate and subtropical regions. Their detection typically results from targeted mycological surveys of soil or dung samples rather than from large‑scale biodiversity inventories.
