General Description
Pygospio is a genus of small, tube‑dwelling marine polychaete worms belonging to the family Spionidae. Members of the genus are characterized by a slender, elongated body composed of numerous chaetigers (segments bearing chaetae). They possess a pair of well‑developed, elongated palps used for deposit feeding, and their parapodia bear simple capillary chaetae. The prostomium is usually rounded with distinct eyespots in some species. Pygospio worms construct rigid, parchment‑like tubes from sediment particles and mucus, attaching them to substrate such as sand, mud, or shells.
Ecology and Habitat
- Feeding: Deposit feeders; they extend their palps over the tube opening to capture organic particles from the surrounding sediment.
- Habitat: Intertidal and shallow subtidal zones, often in estuarine, lagoonal, or mangrove environments where fine sediments accumulate.
- Ecological Role: Contribute to benthic nutrient cycling and provide a food source for fish, crustaceans, and other predatory invertebrates. Their tube structures can increase microhabitat complexity.
Geographic Distribution
Species of Pygospio have a cosmopolitan distribution, reported from temperate to tropical coastal waters worldwide, including the Atlantic coasts of Europe and North America, the Mediterranean Sea, the Pacific coast of Asia, and the Southern Hemisphere (e.g., New Zealand, South Africa).

Reproduction
Most Pygospio species are gonochoristic (separate sexes) and reproduce via external fertilization. Gametes are released into the water column, and larvae are planktonic trochophores that later settle and metamorphose into benthic adults.

Pygospio spp. are frequently used as bioindicator organisms in sediment quality assessments because of their sensitivity to organic enrichment, heavy metals, and hypoxic conditions. Their rapid population responses to environmental changes make them valuable for monitoring coastal ecosystem health.
