Overview
Pumpellyite is a group of sorosilicate minerals belonging to the amphibole super‑group. The minerals in this group share a similar crystal structure but vary in their dominant cations (e.g., Ca, Mg, Fe²⁺, Fe³⁺). They are typically found in low‑ to medium‑grade metamorphic rocks, especially those formed under greenschist to blueschist facies conditions.

Historical Background
The mineral group was first described in 1922 from specimens collected in the Adirondack Mountains of New York, USA. It was named in honor of Raphael Pumpelly (1837–1923), an American geologist and explorer noted for his contributions to the geological mapping of the United States and studies of the western Atlantic seaboard.

Industrial and Economic Significance
Pumpellyite minerals have no major commercial applications. Their primary importance lies in academic and exploration contexts, where they serve as index minerals for reconstructing metamorphic histories and tectonic settings.
