Pulmonoscorpius

Pulmonoscorpius is an extinct genus of giant scorpions that lived during the Carboniferous period, approximately 300–320 million years ago. Fossils attributed to this genus have been recovered from sedimentary deposits in the United Kingdom, notably from the Coal Measures of Scotland and England. The genus is best known from the species Pulmonoscorpius kirktonensis, which was formally described in the mid‑1970s.

Morphology
Pulmonoscorpius specimens are distinguished by a large, robust metasoma (tail) and well‑preserved pedipalps (pincers). The most complete fossil indicates a total length of up to 70 cm (approximately 27 inches), making it one of the largest scorpions known from the fossil record. The exoskeleton shows the typical segmentation of scorpions, with pronounced pectines on the ventral surface, suggesting adaptations for a terrestrial lifestyle.

Paleoecology
The Carboniferous Coal Measures represent swampy, forested environments with abundant plant debris. The size and morphological features of Pulmonoscorpius imply it was a terrestrial predator, likely preying on other arthropods and small vertebrates inhabiting the leaf litter and undergrowth. The presence of well‑developed respiratory structures (book lungs) inferred from the genus name (“pulmono‑” referring to lungs) suggests it was capable of breathing air, consistent with a fully land‑based existence.

Discovery and Research History
Fossils of Pulmonoscorpius were first reported in the early 20th century, but the genus was not formally named until the 1970s by the arachnologist Walter R. Kjellesvig‑Waering, who described P. kirktonensis based on material from the Kirkton Quarry in Lanarkshire, Scotland. Subsequent studies have examined its phylogenetic relationships within early scorpions, using morphological comparisons to assess its position among Paleozoic scorpion lineages.

Significance
The genus provides important insight into the early evolution of scorpions, particularly regarding the transition to fully terrestrial habits and the attainment of large body size in pre‑Mesozoic arachnids. Its fossils contribute to understanding the diversity of Carboniferous terrestrial ecosystems and the ecological roles occupied by arthropod predators of that era.
