Prusiek [ˈpruɕɛk] is a village in south-eastern Poland, located in the administrative district of Gmina Sanok, within Sanok County, Subcarpathian Voivodeship. It lies approximately 7 kilometres (4 miles) west of Sanok and 57 kilometres (35 miles) south of the regional capital Rzeszów.
Geography and Location
The village is situated on the Bukowskie Foothills (Pogórze Bukowskie), at the foot of the Wiechy range, along the Sanoczek and Niebieszczanka rivers. It covers an area of approximately 7 square kilometres.
History
The name "Prusiek" is derived from the Old Polish word przesieka, meaning a swath cut through a forest, which historically served as a defensive barrier against enemy forces. The first historical mention of Prusiek dates back to 1361. Archaeological excavations have confirmed traces of settlement from ancient times, including artifacts of the Przeworsk culture from the 2nd century AD.
Demographics
As of the 2021 census, the village had a population of approximately 840 inhabitants, with a population density of about 120 inhabitants per square kilometre.
Administration
Prusiek holds the status of a sołectwo (administrative subdivision) within Gmina Sanok. A county road (No. 2229R) runs through the village, connecting Prusiek to the nearby locality of Wysoczany.
