Prospero Caterino (1795 – 1881) was an Italian prelate of the Roman Catholic Church who was elevated to the College of Cardinals in 1853 and served in several high‑ranking curial positions during the pontificate of Pope Pius IX.
Overview
Born on 2 March 1795 in Rome, Caterini entered the priesthood after completing his studies at the Pontifical Roman Seminary. He was ordained in 1819 and subsequently held a series of diplomatic and administrative posts within the Holy See, including roles in the Congregation for Extraordinary Ecclesiastical Affairs and the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith (Propaganda Fide). In 1853, Pope Pius IX created him a cardinal priest, assigning him the titular church of San Lorenzo in Panisperna. Cardinal Caterini participated in the 1878 papal conclave that elected Pope Leo XIII and remained active in the Roman Curia until his death on 15 March 1881 in Rome.
