Prolobitidae is an extinct family of ammonoid cephalopods belonging to the order Prolecanitida within the subclass Ammonoidea. The family is primarily known from the Late Devonian to the Early Carboniferous strata of what are now Europe and North America. Its type genus is Prolobites, first described by Waagen in 1880.

Morphology Members of Prolobitidae possessed generally involute to moderately evolute shells that were typically disc‑shaped (planispiral) and ranged from small to medium size (up to several centimeters in diameter). The shell surface was often smooth or weakly ornamented with occasional growth lines. Suture patterns are characterized by relatively simple lobes and saddles compared with later, more derived ammonoids; the ventral lobe is typically narrow, and the lateral lobes are shallow.
Geologic and geographic range Fossils assigned to Prolobitidae have been recovered from Late Devonian (Famennian) and Early Carboniferous (Mississippian) marine deposits. Notable occurrences include:
- The Frasnian–Famennian limestones of the Germanic Basin.
- The Mississippian carbonates of the Illinois and Kentucky regions in the United States.
- The Devonian outcrops of the Carnic Alps (Italy/Austria).
These distributions suggest that Prolobitidae inhabited a broad shallow‑marine shelf environment across the paleoequatorial to temperate latitudes of the Devonian–Carboniferous world.
Paleoecology As nektonic predators, members of Prolobitidae likely occupied mid‑water to near‑benthic zones, preying on small arthropods and other marine invertebrates. Their relatively simple suture morphology may indicate a comparatively earlier stage in the evolutionary trend toward increasingly complex shell sutures observed in later ammonoid lineages.
Significance Prolobitidae is important for biostratigraphic correlations of Late Devonian–Early Carboniferous sequences, particularly in the European and North American basins where their relatively rapid evolutionary turnover provides useful index fossils for regional stratigraphy.
