Project Vanguard

Overview
Project Vanguard was a United States Navy‑led program, active from 1956 to 1959, that aimed to launch the nation’s first artificial satellite into orbit as part of the International Geophysical Year (IGY) 1957‑1958. The program was managed by the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) and involved the design, construction, and launch of the Vanguard rocket series and its payload, the Vanguard 1 satellite.

Historical Context
Following the Soviet Union’s successful launch of Sputnik 1 on 4 October 1957, the United States accelerated its own satellite efforts. At the time, the United States had three parallel satellite initiatives: the Army’s Redstone‑derived Explorer project, the Air Force’s Atlas‑based programs, and the Navy’s Project Vanguard. Vanguard was selected initially because its launch vehicle was a pure scientific research rocket, considered safer for the civilian scientific payloads intended for the IGY.

  1. Vanguard TV‑3 (22 December 1957) – The first attempt to place Vanguard into orbit ended in a catastrophic failure seconds after ignition; the rocket exploded on the launch pad at Cape Canaveral.
  2. Vanguard TV‑3A (6 March 1958) – A second attempt also failed; the vehicle lost thrust shortly after liftoff and crashed into the Atlantic Ocean.
  3. Vanguard 1 (17 March 1958) – The third launch succeeded, placing the satellite into a highly elliptical orbit (periapsis ≈ 654 km, apoapsis ≈ 3 862 km). The satellite remains in orbit as of 2026, making it the oldest artificial object still circling Earth.
