A pressure shadow (also called a strain shadow or pressure rim) is a microstructural feature that forms in crystalline rocks surrounding a rigid inclusion (such as a mineral grain, crystal fragment, or xenolith) when the host rock is subjected to differential stress. The local stress concentration induces a deformation zone on the side of the inclusion opposite to the direction of maximum compressive stress, producing a lens‑ or wing‑shaped region of altered mineral orientation, recrystallization, or compositional modification.
