It lies on the eastern tip of the Darß peninsula, part of the larger Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula, and is situated within the Western Pomerania Lagoon Area National Park (Nationalpark Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft).

Geography
Prerow occupies a narrow strip of land bordered by the Baltic Sea to the north and the bodden (lagoon) waters of the Darß to the south. The area features sandy beaches, dunes, and a relatively flat terrain, with an elevation typically ranging from sea level to a few meters above. The surrounding landscape includes a mix of coastal meadows, pine forests, and protected natural habitats.

History
The settlement traces its origins to the medieval period, with the first documented mention occurring in the 13th century. Historically, the region was part of the Duchy of Pomerania and later came under Swedish, Prussian, and German rule. Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, Prerow developed as a modest fishing village. Post‑World War II, the municipality was incorporated into the German Democratic Republic and, after German reunification in 1990, experienced growth as a tourist destination.
