Prays atomocella
Prays atomocella is a species of moth belonging to the family Yponomeutidae, commonly known as ermine moths. It was formally described by Lord Walsingham in 1907. This species is primarily known from the Canary Islands.
Classification
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Arthropoda
Class: Insecta
Order: Lepidoptera
Family: Yponomeutidae
Genus: Prays
Species: P. atomocella
Distribution
Prays atomocella is native to and endemic to the Canary Islands, an archipelago belonging to Spain off the coast of northwestern Africa. Its type locality is Tenerife, and it has been recorded on other islands within the group.
Ecology
The larvae of Prays atomocella are known to feed on plants within the family Oleaceae. Key host plants identified for this species include Olea europaea, commonly known as the olive tree, and Phillyrea latifolia, or broad-leaved phillyrea. As with many other species in the genus Prays, the larvae typically act as miners, boring into the leaves, shoots, or fruits of their host plants. Due to its feeding habits on olive trees, P. atomocella may be considered an agricultural pest in regions where it is prevalent. Its life cycle and specific damage patterns are similar to those of the well-known olive moth, Prays oleae.
