The origins of the organization date back to 1636 with the establishment of the Royal Post House (Kungliga Postverket) by Axel Oxenstierna. For centuries, it operated as a government agency. In 1994, the agency was transformed into a state-owned limited company named Posten AB. In 2009, Posten AB merged with the Danish national postal service, Post Danmark A/S, to form the PostNord group. Following this merger, the Swedish operations were reorganized under the brand PostNord Sverige.
Headquartered in Solna, Sweden, the company provides a range of services including letter and parcel delivery, logistics solutions for businesses, and e-commerce fulfillment. Its operations are regulated by the Swedish Post and Telecom Authority (Post- och telestyrelsen, or PTS), which ensures compliance with the Postal Services Act. This act requires PostNord Sverige to provide nationwide mail delivery at affordable prices, covering all addresses in the country regardless of geographic location.
In response to the decline in traditional mail volumes due to digitalization, PostNord Sverige has shifted its strategic focus toward the logistics and parcel delivery sector, driven largely by the growth of online retail. The company maintains an extensive network of distribution centers and "service points" (postombud), typically located in grocery stores, gas stations, and retail outlets, to facilitate parcel collection and drop-off.
The ownership structure of the parent company, PostNord AB, consists of a 60% stake held by the Swedish state and a 40% stake held by the Danish state. However, voting rights are split equally (50/50) between the two nations. PostNord Sverige operates as a distinct business unit within this bilateral corporate framework.
