Ponta do Seixas

Definition
Ponta do Seixas is the easternmost point of the American continent, situated on the Atlantic coast of the state of Paraíba in northeastern Brazil.

Overview
The headland lies within the municipality of João Pessoa, approximately 8 km east of the city’s urban center. Its geographic coordinates are roughly 7°9′S latitude and 34°47′W longitude. Ponta do Seixas marks the point where the continent’s coastline projects farthest eastward, a distinction that is commemorated by a modest stone monument and an informative plaque for visitors. The site is a popular destination for tourism, photography, and educational trips, and it offers unobstructed views of the Atlantic Ocean and sunrise over the water. Access is provided via a paved road that connects the headland with the city’s main thoroughfares.

Etymology / Origin
The name is Portuguese in origin. “Ponta” translates to “point” or “cape,” referring to the protruding landform. “Seixas” is a Portuguese surname historically associated with landowners in the region; the property on which the headland sits was once held by the Seixas family during the colonial period. Hence, “Ponta do Seixas” literally means “Seixas’ Point.”

Characteristics

  • Geography: The headland consists of a rocky outcrop rising modestly above sea level, with nearby sandy beaches such as Praia do Jacaré and Praia de Coqueirinho. The coastline here is characterized by gently rolling dunes and coastal vegetation typical of the Atlantic Forest biome’s transition zone.
  • Climate: Ponta do Seixas experiences a tropical monsoon climate (Köppen Aw), with a rainy season from March to August and a drier period from September to February. Average annual temperature hovers around 26 °C (79 °F).
  • Infrastructure: A small visitor area includes a concrete platform, an informational board, and a bronze compass rose indicating the cardinal directions. There is no permanent lighthouse at the point; the nearest operational lighthouse is the Farol do Cabo Branco, located a few kilometers north.
  • Cultural significance: The location is celebrated in Brazilian geography and tourism literature as the “Easternmost Point of the Americas.” Annual events, such as sunrise observations on New Year’s Day, draw local communities and tourists alike.
  • Conservation: The surrounding coastal environment falls under municipal protections aimed at preserving native flora and preventing erosion. Development is limited to maintain the natural character of the headland.
