Poniklá is a municipality and village in the Semily District of the Liberec Region in the Czech Republic. It is situated in the northern part of the country, within the Bohemian Paradise (Český ráj) protected landscape area, approximately 10 km east of the town of Jičín and about 70 km northeast of the regional capital, Liberec.
Geography
The village lies on the right bank of the Jičínka River at an elevation of roughly 390 m above sea level. The surrounding terrain is characterised by rolling hills, forested areas, and limestone formations typical of the Bohemian Paradise.

Poniklá is part of the Czech Republic’s system of municipalities (obec). It falls under the jurisdiction of the Semily District (okres Semily) and the Liberec Region (kraj Liberec). The municipality is governed by a local council and a mayor (starosta).

According to the Czech Statistical Office, the population of Poniklá was approximately 450 inhabitants as of the most recent census data (2023). The settlement has a predominantly Czech ethnic composition, with a small proportion of residents belonging to other nationalities.
History
The first documented mention of Poniklá dates to the early 14th century, when the area was part of the Kingdom of Bohemia. Over the centuries, the village was primarily agricultural, but from the 19th century onward it became noted for glass‑bead production, a craft that developed in the region’s established glass‑making tradition.
Economy and cultural heritage
Poniklá is best known for its historic glass‑bead industry. Local workshops produced small, multicoloured glass beads that were exported throughout Europe and used in jewellery and folk costumes. The craft reached its peak in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Today, the legacy of bead‑making is preserved by the Museum of Glass Beads (Muzeum skleněných korálků), which exhibits historical production techniques, tools, and a collection of antique beads.
The municipality’s economy is now diversified, with small‑scale tourism, agriculture, and services supplementing the remaining artisanal and small‑business activities. The scenic surroundings attract hikers and cyclists, and Poniklá serves as a gateway for exploring the Bohemian Paradise’s rock formations and castles.

Poniklá is accessible via regional roads connecting it to Jičín and other nearby towns. Public transportation includes bus services that link the village with the district centre, Semily, and the regional capital, Liberec. Basic amenities such as a primary school, municipal office, and a community centre are present within the village.
