Description
Polymixis xanthomista is a noctuid moth with an adult wingspan ranging from approximately 30 mm to 36 mm. The forewings are typically grey‑brown to dark brown, marked with a series of distinctive yellow‑orange or ochreous patches and transverse lines that give the species its specific epithet “xanthomista” (Greek xanthos = yellow, mystes = veil). The hindwings are paler, often light grey or whitish, and display a faint fringe. Sexual dimorphism is minimal; males and females are similar in size and coloration.
Distribution and Habitat
The species is native to the western Palearctic region. Confirmed records include:
- Southern and central Europe (e.g., Italy, Spain, France, Greece, the Balkans, and parts of the Iberian Peninsula)
- The Mediterranean islands (Sicily, Sardinia, Corsica)
- North Africa (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia)
Polymixis xanthomista inhabits open, dry habitats such as scrublands, grasslands, and rocky slopes, frequently at low to moderate elevations.
Biology and Ecology
- Flight period: Adults are primarily on the wing from late spring to early summer (May–July), with occasional later emergences in autumn depending on local climate.
- Behavior: Like most noctuid moths, it is nocturnal and is attracted to light sources.
- Larval host plants: Larvae are polyphagous on low‑lying herbaceous plants. Documented host genera include species of Helianthemum, Thymus, and various low shrubs typical of the Mediterranean maquis. Specific host‑plant associations vary regionally and are not exhaustively documented.
- Life cycle: The species is univoltine (one generation per year) in most of its range. Eggs are laid on host plants; larvae feed through late summer, pupate in the soil or leaf litter, and overwinter as pupae before adult emergence.
Conservation Status
No global assessment has been published for Polymixis xanthomista. It is not listed on the IUCN Red List, and regional records suggest it is locally common within suitable habitats. Habitat loss due to agricultural intensification and urban development may affect local populations, but specific threats have not been quantified.
