Description
Polygala amara is a herbaceous perennial plant reaching heights of 20–60 cm. The stems are erect, branching, and typically unbranched at the lower portion. Leaves are opposite, sessile or shortly petiolate, lanceolate to ovate, with margins entire or slightly dentate. The flowers are borne in terminal racemes or solitary spikes. Each flower exhibits the characteristic “keel” of the Polygalaceae, with a bilabiate corolla; the upper lip is often yellowish‑green, while the lower lip bears a distinctive purple or red crest. The fruit is a slender capsule that dehisces to release small, winged seeds.

Habitat and Distribution
Polygala amara is native to temperate regions of Europe and western Asia. Its range includes:

  • Central and southern Europe (e.g., France, Italy, Austria, Hungary, the Balkans).
  • Extending eastward into the Caucasus and parts of Turkey.

The species prefers calcareous, well‑drained soils and is commonly found in grasslands, open woodland clearings, meadows, and dry rocky slopes. It tolerates disturbed habitats such as roadsides and abandoned fields.

Ecology
The flowers are visited by a variety of pollinators, especially bees and butterflies, which are attracted to the nectar and pollen. The species is a component of semi‑natural grassland communities and can be an indicator of unimproved, species‑rich meadows.

Conservation Status
Across most of its range, Polygala amara is not considered globally threatened. However, in some national Red Lists it is listed as “Near Threatened” or “Vulnerable” due to habitat loss from intensive agriculture and land‑use changes.

Uses

  • Traditional medicine: Historically, the plant’s bitter constituents were used in folk remedies as a digestive aid or tonic. Modern pharmacological validation is limited; the use is primarily historical.
  • Horticulture: Occasionally cultivated in rock gardens or naturalistic meadow plantings for its attractive flowers and ability to thrive on poor, alkaline soils.

Chemical constituents
Preliminary phytochemical studies have identified the presence of saponins, flavonoids, and quinoline alkaloids, which contribute to the plant’s characteristic bitterness.
