Polycera elegans is a dorid nudibranch characterized by a slender, elongated body typically ranging from 15 mm to 30 mm in length. The dorsum is smooth and bears a series of elongate oral tentacles. Notable features include:

  • Coloration: The mantle is generally translucent white to pale pink, often with a faint brownish hue. Prominent lateral processes (cerata) are tipped with contrasting colors, usually orange or brown, which may vary among individuals.
  • Rhinophores: Paired, lamellate rhinophores are situated anteriorly, bearing a similar coloration to the body.
  • Gill structure: A circlet of branching gill plumes encircles the posterior dorsum, typically matching the mantle’s base color but sometimes displaying the same accent colors as the cerata.

Distribution
Polycera elegans is reported from temperate coastal waters of the North Atlantic, with documented occurrences in:

  • Western Europe: United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Spain, Portugal, and the Azores.
  • Eastern North America: Northeastern United States (e.g., New England) and Atlantic Canada.

The species is primarily found in intertidal to shallow subtidal zones, generally not exceeding depths of 30 m.

Habitat and Ecology

  • Seasonality: Peak adult abundance is typically recorded in late spring and early summer, coinciding with hydroid bloom periods.

Behaviour
Polycera elegans is a slow-moving benthic grazer. When disturbed, it may exhibit a defensive rolling motion and can secrete mucus containing deterrent chemicals derived from its prey. Its bright ceratal coloration functions as aposematic signaling to potential predators.

Conservation Status
The species is not listed on the IUCN Red List and is generally considered to have a stable population within its known range. No major threats have been identified, though localized habitat degradation (e.g., coastal development, water pollution) could affect specific populations.

  • Chemical ecology: Studies have investigated the sequestration of hydroid-derived compounds in P. elegans as a model for chemical defense mechanisms in nudibranchs.
