Polnička

1. Fungus

Polnička (plural: Polničky) is the common Czech name for the mushroom species Agaricus campestris, also known as the Meadow Mushroom, Field Mushroom, or Pasture Mushroom. It is a widely distributed and popular edible mushroom belonging to the genus Agaricus.

  • Characteristics: Agaricus campestris typically has a white to creamy cap, ranging from 3 to 10 cm in diameter, initially convex and flattening with age. The gills are free and start pink, darkening to brown or black as spores mature. The stem is relatively short and sturdy, often with a fragile, evanescent ring. It typically grows in grassy areas, meadows, pastures, and lawns, preferring disturbed ground, and is often found after rain.
  • Edibility: It is highly regarded as an edible mushroom, known for its mild flavor. However, care must be taken to distinguish it from toxic look-alikes, particularly species of Agaricus that stain yellow and have a chemical smell (e.g., Agaricus xanthodermus), or from species of Amanita (e.g., Amanita virosa or Amanita phalloides) when young, though Amanita species have a volva at the base of the stem and typically white gills.
